Hey there beautiful souls of light!
I was contemplating on why do people do bad things and here’s what I came up with:
1) They are selfish and inclined highly toward the reptilian brain. Reptilian brain, as it relates to a concept of human evolution, represents the core functions that we all are born with that seek to, as Slipknot put it “Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat”. This brain has no compassion and is only out for itself. Most people are balanced 60/40 (Good/Evil) or vice-versa. However, with the person who is more reptilian, their proportion will be in the range of 10/90 — Really, little redeeming qualities are apparent in everyday interaction. For an on-screen example of this type of person, look at the Dustin Hoffman character in Hero (1992) – IMDb. Another example would be the “Biff Tannen” character in Back To The Future II, the one where Biff had the casino.
2) Revenge. Isn’t it interesting that with an ample amount of introspection, one can finally realize that mankind’s acts of aggression, hate, and meanness are really a confused soul’s reaction to sadness, isolation, and disenfranchisement. There are obvious examples of these kinds of people like the white guy who is racist against ALL blacks because one black guy shot his father. Or the woman Charlize Theoron played in Monster (2003) who murdered men as a silent revenge for the molestation she suffered as a child. But think deeper. What about the freedom-loving citizen who being an idealist, upon discovering that justice rarely prevails, only enough appearance of justice to keep an unmanageable number of outraged citizens from revolt and riot. In the west and down south this was always known as a “Dog-and-Pony-Show”. Today it is know around the beltway as “Political Theater”.
The realization that most of your hero’s are motivated by money and power, just as most of your villans are, is disheartening to many, and disenchanting to even more. Because you now see the truth for what it is, have pierced the veil — seen behind the wizard’s curtain, as it were, you now feel isolated from the majority of your friends and peers who have no idea what is really going on, and quite honestly, to paraphrase Jack Nicholson – they wouldn’t be able to handle the truth.
So then you have a Columbine tragedy. A situation where some confused souls — if not fhaully understanding the inherent corruption, greed, and hypocrisy of the mostly “conservative” “family-values” crowd they lived in and were surrounded by — sensend deep within that reality wasn’t the perception.
This type also is known to go on murderous rampages with no apparent logic. Chaos theory reigns supreme in this person’s behviour (you would scarcely call it a thinking-pattern because it seems more of an animal instinct). The easiest example of this type I can give is Heath Ledger’s ‘Joker” character from The Dark Knight.
… Well, time’s running out folks … Got get some social interaction in so I’ll have to finish this later. Watch for the next installment.
