Sweet Home Alabama

I was scrolling through my Facebook account a few days ago when “Katherine’s Summer Memories” showed up in my feed. Looking back on the past few months I was struck by how many things have changed since then. I remember sitting down and having a difficult conversation with my boss towards the end of April. Eric and I were putting our house on the market May 1st. The time had come for us to move cross country and start the next chapter of our lives. This had been a dream of mine for many years, and now with the support of my husband we were making it a reality.

By mid-July we accepted an offer on the house and purchased our new home in Alabama. Thanks to my sister Melissa, an Alabama resident herself, we were able to see a video tour of what would become our new home. A beautiful post civil war house built in 1887 that had sat empty for a couple of years. More on that in another post.

Purging and packing consumed our lives from July to August. We set a date to be on the road, hired a trucking company and movers to take what was left of our worldly possession from Oregon to Alabama.

On August 12th Eric, myself and 4 cats loaded up the Jeep, towing a 6×12 U-haul trailer behind us and hit the road. The cats did surprisingly well traveling in a huge kennel during the day and sleeping in hotel rooms at night. By August 16th we’d arrived at the Melissa’s. We embraced with tears in our eyes and then followed her from Enterprise to Geneva to see our new home.

We’ve been here just shy of 6 weeks, still navigating our way through the boxes as we settle into our new lives. We have great neighbors who are more than generous with their time and help. Hepkat Organics is up and running and we are living the dream.
