🤖 AI data centers bought the supply.
Western Digital’s CEO said the company is “pretty much sold out for calendar year 2026,” with orders locked in through 2028. Seagate says the same. When the two companies that make most of the world’s hard drives sell out, retail is last in line.
🏠Expansion is happening — but in Thailand, not the US.
WD won approval to invest $689M expanding its HDD factories in Thailand (first major capacity bump in years), and Seagate tripled its read/write-head production in Minneapolis. But here’s the catch: even WD’s expansion can’t release new capacity within 2026, and both makers are prioritizing higher-capacity drives over more units. New US fabs aren’t coming — HDDs were never really made in America, and the specialized tooling/engineering “tribal knowledge” lives in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
đź’ľ Drives need memory chips too.
A modern hard drive has an onboard DRAM cache and controller, caught in the same AI-driven memory shortage that’s squeezing SSDs and GPUs.

Tariffs are meant to bring manufacturing home, although the near-term results remain mixed: manufacturing employment is down about 98,000 year over year, and only 36% of firms in the ISM survey say they plan to reshore. But the long-term buildout is real: the CHIPS and Science Act directs roughly $52 billion toward U.S. chipmaking and workforce development, while President Trump is following through on his promise to rebuild American manufacturing by pursuing 1 million active apprentices by roughly FY2028–29. Intel, TSMC, Micron, Samsung, and 50+ community colleges are building that training pipeline. The industry may add 115,000 chip jobs by 2030, with about 67,000 at risk of going unfilled—meaning trained IT and technical students will be needed. The result? Retail HDD prices are up ~46% since September 2025. The 16–28TB tier — exactly where an 18TB drive sits — got hit hardest because that’s the capacity data centers are hoarding for archive storage.

If you’ve got high-capacity spinning storage right now, treat it like gold. Back it up. Don’t let it fail. Replacing it could cost you six times what you paid.
